The Item Wall Clip is an intermediate trick used in Super Mario Maker. This trick allows Mario to clip items either partially or completely through a solid wall through various methods.
Mechanics[]
- Enemies that are fully or partially clipped when a P Switch begins or ends will be crushed.
- If Cape Mario or Raccoon Mario hits a clipped object with his cape/tail that object will briefly be unable to interact with the ground and will fall completely through whatever wall it is in. After it leaves the wall it will return to normal.
- Items that get ejected from the wall in a certain way will briefly have a lot of momentum in the opposite direction.
- Prior to update patches, clipping a Yoshi would cause it to become completely frozen, while clipping a spring would cause it to become non-interactive.
- Items inside of walls are ungrabbable.
Variations[]
Cape / Raccoon Tail[]
With the use of a cape or Raccoon tail, it is possible to clip an item through a wall with many different variations. It is also possible to clip items that are stacked behind P Switches, in addition to the Rotating Block.
Rotating Block | Underwater |
Chain Chomp[]
If a Chain Chomp breaks free from its post in the Super Mario Bros. 3 game style while inside of a wall it will become clipped inside of it. This will not work if the Chain Chomp is released by other means, such as by destroying the post.

Corner[]
Throwing an item upwards while at a corner will cause it to be clipped into the wall. This is also possible to do with Yoshi. As Super Mario, it is possible to clip the item with a forward throw.
Up Throw | Yoshi | Forward Throw |
Dry Bones Conveyor[]
Note: This only works on levels created before version ?
Jumping on a Dry Bones on a high speed conveyor belt while it is touching an adjacent block will cause it to become clipped after being crushed.
Normal |
---|
Enemy Waking Up[]
It is possible to clip an enemy into the corner of a wall if Mario is standing next to it when the enemy wakes up after being stunned. If this is done next to a flat wall the enemy will only be partially clipped for 1 frame.

Falling Block[]
Note: The normal method only works on levels created before version ?
If a sideways spring is placed on ground one block above lava, a block falling off a track will clip it through and cause it to start sinking. Even though the normal method was patched, this is still possible if the sideways spring is placed on a Semisolid Platform, such as a Lava Lift. Interestingly, this will also work will a falling Hidden Block.
Normal | Hidden Block |

Giant Bowser[]
If a giant Bowser is trapped in a four block wide space it is able to clip through the wall if it jumps and falls into a three block wide space. Additionally in the New Super Mario Bros. U game style Bowser is able to walk through the blocks directly in front of him. This can also be done in any game style if a giant Bowser Jr. performs a Ground Pound in a two block wide space.
This is possibly due Bowser and Bowser Jr. having a skinnier hitbox while jumping.
Bowser | Bowser Jr. |
Hidden Block[]
Activating a Hidden Block while an item is behind it will cause it to become clipped into the wall.

Item Spawning From Pipe[]
Note: The Super Star method only works on levels created before version ?
Jumping on top of a winged Koopa Troopa as soon as it spawns from a pipe facing up in the New Super Mario Bros. U game style will cause it to become clipped inside of it. This can also be done by kicking a Shell Helmet as soon as it spawns with a Goomba's Shoe, as well as by hitting a Super Star with a block.
Koopa Troopa | Shell Helmet | Super Star |
Midair Input[]
Standing close enough to a wall and throwing an enemy forward and then immediately turning around and pressing up on the next frame allows Mario to clip the enemy into any solid object and activate them like it would be possible with a normal up throw. It is also possible to clip the enemy completely under the solid object if there is a void or semi-solid under it.
Normal | Full Clip |

Power-up in a One Block-High Space[]
If Small Mario is forced to crouch in a one-block tall space by collecting a power-up while he is holding the item it will become clipped into the ceiling. This is only possible in the Super Mario Bros. 3 and New Super Mario Bros. U game styles, as well as only working if there is a Semisolid Platform directly below the wall. However, it is also possible in the Super Mario World game style if it is done underwater.
Normal |
---|
Raccoon Crouch Flight[]
If Raccoon Mario crouch flies while holding an item he is able to clip it into a ceiling by flying into it if there is a Semisolid Platform underneath it.
Normal |
---|
Rotating Block[]
If an item is behind a Rotating Block as it goes back to its normal state it will become clipped. Additionally, if it has upward momentum it can clip into the block directly above it.
Normal | Momentum |

Shell[]
Note: The normal method is partially patched on levels created after version 1.47.
Throwing a shell into the bottom of a pipe or wall, will cause it to become clipped if there is a Semisolid Platform. This can also be by done without a Semisolid Platform by forcing it into the ceiling, either by bouncing POW Blocks or using Note Blocks.
Alternatively, if Yoshi does a duck jump and spits out a shell it is able to be clipped at a corner, or when there is a Semisolid Platform.
Pipe | Wall | Yoshi Corner | Yoshi Semisolid |
Tracked and Winged Blocks[]
When an object was originally on a track or a block has wings, even if it gets hits and Mario resets the room, it will not be able to interact with items on the sides or bottom, but will still interact with objects on the upper part if the object is falling down. This can allow Mario to throw items through it. This results in the impossibility of up throwing an item to activate a block.
Partial Clip |
Underwater Duck[]
Ducking with an item and then swimming upwards will cause the item to be clipped into the ceiling if there is a Semisolid Platform. This is only possible in the Super Mario World game style.
Normal |
---|
Warp Pipe Exit[]
When Mario exits a downward facing Warp Pipe that is partially covered by a block as Super Mario or higher he will be forced into a crouch. This will cause Mario to drop the item while he is still partially inside of the pipe due to the fact that Mario is unable to crouch with items in the Super Mario Bros. 3 and New Super Mario Bros. U game styles.
Normal |
---|
Winged Enemies[]
Hitting a winged enemy, such as Buzzy Beetles, Spinies, Bob-ombs and Bowser Jr. with a cape/tail while it's inside a wall will cause it to become clipped inside it.
Normal |
---|
Yoshi[]
If a Yoshi spits an item near a corner of a solid wall or pipe, he is able to clip items into it.
Normal |
---|
Yoshi Winged Items Glitch[]
If a winged object loses its wings by being grabbed by Mario, it will retain some physics of still having the wings while appearing to be a normal object. This allows Yoshi to spit items through walls.
Normal |
---|
Wrong State POW Block Glitch[]
Note: This only works before version ?
By grabbing a POW Block after it falls off a track, the POW will retain the physics of falling off a track even while being carried. This allows the POW to fall through the ground after being dropped. Once it falls through the ground the POW will return to normal.

Partial Item Clips[]
Bouncing[]
Bouncing an item on a spring and walking underneath it will cause the item to become partially clipped into the wall.
Normal |
---|
Clown Car Dismount[]
By dismounting a Clown Car directly above the edge of the ground it is possible to partially clip it into the wall.
Normal |
---|
Dropping[]
Note: This only works on levels created before version ?
If Mario himself does a Partial Wall Clip while holding an item and drops it while being inside the wall it will become partially clipped.
Normal |
---|
Forward Throw[]
When Mario throws an item forward or Yoshi spits it out, it will have enough speed to very partially clip into a wall if it lands directly in-between two different blocks. This will cause the item to slightly bounce upwards instead of immediately falling down.
Normal | Yoshi |
---|---|
P Switch Press[]
If a P Switch is pressed near a wall while having forward momentum it will become partially clipped into the wall.
Normal |
---|
Spawning Giant Enemies[]
By spawning a giant enemy from a block or Bill Blaster into a one-block space it is possible to partially clip them into the ground. This is due to the fact that objects start small when spawning before expanding in size.
Block | Bill Blaster |
Up Throw[]
Note: The normal method only works on levels created before version 1.47
If Mario throws an item upwards while having forward momentum it will become partially clipped in the wall. Even though the item will be ejected from the wall on levels created after version 1.47, the item is still able to be thrown partially through the wall.
Normal | One-Way Wall |

Wiggler[]
If a Wiggler is placed on a conveyor belt in a certain way its body will become partially clipped inside of the wall.
